Initiated in South Africa

  • Cordis Endovascular “Pig-Lab Training”: 2005 – 2006 (Academic Coordinator). The Cordis training initiative ran for 14 months and comprised six training sessions. These included evidence-based lectures and hands-on training at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Centre (using pigs as training models). Approximately 10-12 specialists were trained on various endovascular procedures at each session. This was the first major endovascular training initiative in South Africa which sparked a natural interest in endovascular therapy.
  • University of the Witwatersrand Biennial Endovascular Workshop (initiated and hosted): July 2008. This intensive two-day workshop was part of the University Biennial Symposium and included the live transmission of 8 endovascular cases.
  • Endovascular Forum Workshop (initiated and hosted): November 2008. This two-day endovascular workshop followed the success of the Biennial initiate and included the live transmission of 7 cases.
  • Vascular Education Forum Seminar (Academic chairperson): 2008 – current. The Vascular Education Forum is organized and hosted by Cordis Endovascular, Johnson & Johnson; Sanofi-Aventis; General Electric; Bard medical; KCI; Vascumed. This is an ongoing educational initiative (seminars and lectures) which rotates throughout different centres in South Africa; its target audience is non-vascular professionals (general practitioners, physicians, etc.) who are lectured on current trends in vascular medicine.

Dr IR Grant

Specialist Vascular Surgeon
MBChB (Pret), FCS(SA) Cum Laude, Cert Vascular Surgery

My vascular surgery training commenced in 2020 at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg under the leadership of Prof ATO Abdool Carrim, Dr Taalib Monareng and Dr Ismail Cassimjee. As the only fellow in the circuit, I had the privilege of gaining a great deal of experience and truly maturing in all aspects of vascular surgery. Looking back on my training I can see that I have not only grown as a vascular surgeon but have also developed as a teacher and leader. The structure and availability of certain services in South Africa create a unique environment for us in vascular surgery as we are the sole department dealing with the open or endovascular treatment of vascular disorders.

After completing my fellowship, I started working in private practice with my partners Dr Dirk Le Roux and Dr Pradeep Mistry. This practice has been on the forefront of complex aortic interventions since its inception in South Africa. I am fortunate to have been involved in numerous fenestrated and branched repairs gaining excellent experience at an early stage of my career. This area of vascular surgery is of great interest to me and I hope to also become one of the surgeons at the forefront of this rapidly developing field.
